Mike Swartz

Mike co-founded Upstatement in 2008 to bring the sensibilities of editorial design to the digital world by inventing new story forms, interfaces, and platforms that are engaging, informative and valuable. As CEO, Mike works to articulate a vision for the future and aligns Upstatement’s capabilities with what clients and users need. Mike works with Upstatement’s senior leadership team to steer the studio and create new relationships with clients and partners.

Before founding Upstatement, Mike worked as an editorial designer in the newsrooms of The Boston Globe, the San Jose Mercury News, and Complex magazine. At Upstatement, Mike led projects for Mayor Michelle Wu, Harvard, MIT, NPR, Fidelity, ESPN and others as a strategist, designer and developer. These days Mike lends strategic support, creative vision and internal guidance for teams.

Mike holds a BS in Computer Science from Boston University and is an MBA ’23 candidate at MIT Sloan. When he’s not holding forth on Zoom or Slack, Mike likes to ride bikes, play hockey, and build stuff. Mike lives in Andover, Massachusetts with his wife and two young boys.
