What was our intention?
Led by Partners in Food Solutions, we participated in a volunteer brand design project in collaboration with two District Women’s Development Associations (DWDA) in Zambia. Our intention was to support their goal of providing nutritious products, particularly sunflower oil under the name of THANZI and MANINA, to their communities while fueling empowering economic opportunities for women. We aimed to deliver design that would build awareness and preference for THANZI and MANINA as local brands.

What did we do?
We designed a brand identity, mainly for packaging use, that conveys their differentiation—pure, nutritious, unadulterated sunflower oil made through local sourcing from neighborhood farms and delivering direct support for the local community.

How did this drive impact?
These social entrepreneurs are building and expanding their businesses to their full potential. The long-term goal is to improve the standard of living of small-scale farmers and women in Eastern Province, Zambia. Meanwhile, the association is increasing the volume of sunflower bought from its members and processed into cooking oil, which is marketed to increase revenues for the association and its members.

What do we aspire to do next?
Continue to find collaborative design opportunities around the world in which, by using the power of brand, we can connect purpose to positive impact.
